Back Story on the Creation of Fall 2010 Update on Measure B
In 2006, San Leandro voters passed Measure B, a $109 million dollar school facilities bond which authorized a combination of new construction and modernization projects at school sites throughout the District. New construction projects include:
- The state-of-the-art Fred T. Korematsu (9th grade) Campus at San Leandro High School
- A beautiful, vibrant Arts Education Center, with a multi-media academy for students and a 550-seat theater for school, district and community use
- The Career Technical Education Center
- The 2,200 sq. ft. SLHS library expansion
The above is a partial list. The District’s aggressive and strategic pursuit of $25+ million in state matching funds leveraged the original $109 million bond monies and greatly increased the scope of work. One example is what began as a renovation of an aging industrial arts building has now undergone a major transformation, thanks to $8 million in CTE grants. However, Measure B did not address other facility needs, such as deteriorating sports fields and facilities.
As the District geared up to place another bond measure (Measure M) on the November 2, 2010 ballot, there was deep concern about asking voters to support this new $51 million bond during such a hard economic downturn, especially when Measure B construction was still underway.
It was clear that one effective communications strategy would be to share our phenomenal Measure B successes with the greater community, timing the release in order to maximize yes votes on Measure M. The Measure B Update (Fall 2010) was designed to do just that. The publication is a full-color center spread (or “double truck”) read in the San Leandro Times, a weekly newspaper with a print circulation of 38,5000 and delivered to every home and most businesses in San Leandro. This provided a cost-effective method and a deep penetration into our target audience, San Leandro voters. This story, like the story of Measure B, has a happy ending: Measure M passed with a 62.75% vote and San Leandro Unified School District is in the design development phase of two marquee projects: the SLHS Swim Center and sports fields, and the SLUSD Sports Complex & Burrell Field.
